RoS Filming Locations

Robin of Sherwood was filmed mostly around Bristol (UK), because HTV is based there. BBC Wiltshire has an on-line article, Retrospective: Robin of Sherwood, that includes an interview with Clive Mantle and the some info about the RoS filming locations with pictures from Castle Combe.

Conventry Web had a report in 2001, A Day with the Stars, by Ann Morris, who was lucky enough to be present (with her two children) at the filming set of RoS in Gloustershire for a day in January 1985.

The UK RoS conventions usually make a tour to one or two of the RoS filming locations. Silver Arrow also has a RoS locations guide with some pictures up on the website.

Kristina Steimle has two reports with pictures up on her Nothing's Forgotten website of trips to several RoS filming locations that she made.

David I. of Scotland became Earl of Huntingdon, and between the years 1160 and 1247 (the period of Robin's supposed career)Malcolm IV, William the Lyon and Alexander II (kings of Scotland) were successive holders of this title. This could be where Anthony Munday got the idea for his two plays, written in 1598;The Downfall of Robert Earl of Huntington (note the different spelling) and The Death of Robert Earl of Huntington. He appears to be the first person to mention Robin Hood as the Earl of Huntington. Earlier, John Major and Richard Grafton had claimed that Robin Hood was noble, Munday may have obtained the date for his Earl from John Major, who places Robin in the reign of Richard I.There was a place called Huntington near York, this could be the place where some of the Scottish kings with that title, resided frequently. Some of the Scottish monarchs did have estates in England.
In 1746 Dr. William Stukeley claimed Robin Hood was Robert fitz Ooth pretended earl of Huntington. His pedigree based on william Dugdale's Baronage of 1675 was fictitious. Stukeley had families and individuals that were fictitious, with Fitzooths and Fitzodos interwoven with the lords of Kyme. In other words Robin Hood Earl of Huntingdon, Huntington is probably a totally fictitious person.

There is a village called Gisburn about ten miles from Wyresdale in Lancashire, and also a Guisborough in the North Riding known in the middle ages as Giseburne. Apparently there was a priory situated in this area.
The ballad Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne, may be related to one of these areas, but as we do not know if the Ballad has any basis in fact, Sir Guy may be a totally fictitious person as well. In the ballad, the action takes place in the "greenwood", and Barnsdale.

Church of St John the Evangelist, Perlethorpe. Perlethorpe Church, the Church of St. John Evangelist, was built in 1876 by Sydney William Herbert Pierrepont, 3rd Earl Manvers, and whose memorial can be found on the inner north wall. Designed by Anthony Salvin the cost of the building was £17,000 and it stands across the road from Perlethorpe Church of England School (now Perlethorpe Environmental Education Centre). Some features within its grounds are said to date from the previous church, such as the "dwarf boundary wall" (1861), and gas street lamp (c.1861) by the western gate, more of which were once illuminated on the path leading to Thoresby Hall.
But as early as 1904 very extensive repairs were made necessary due to the poor construction methods used in the walls. Bonding stones had not been placed across the cavity in the walls, and the infill of rubbish there was causing serious decay. The strain caused by the six bells in the tower were also to prove a cause for concern as the decades passed and mining subsidence occured. In 1952 five of these bells would go to West Bridgford.
In the early 1900's the 4th Earl and Countess Manvers would arrive at the original wrought iron gates on the west end in a carriage drawn by a white horse. After the service the Countess would find out from her Estate Agent which of the village's children were missing. She herself would then visit those families in her carriage to ascertain how poorly the child was, before instructing the manager of Home Farm to send that family fresh milk, eggs and butter, whilst providing hot soup direct from Thoresby Hall.
The present entrance to St John's is the lychgate (covered gateway) on the south of its grounds. This was added in 1922 as a memorial to those men from Thoresby who fell in World War
