BACK IN THE HOOD
BBC to remake Robin of Sherwood for Saturday night
By Nicola Methven, Tv Editor
THE BBC is to do a new version of Robin Hood for Saturday evenings, following the huge success of Dr Who.
It will be the first time the Beeb has dramatised the 12th century legend, although ITV has done the swashbuckling story twice.
The last time was from 1984-86, with first Michael Praed and then Jason Connery in the lead role.
An earlier version, between 1955 and 1960, featured Richard Greene as Robin.

Yesterday the new BBC1 boss, Peter Fincham, said he had been so impressed by Dr Who's comeback, he was determined to resurrect other favourites. "Robin Hood is another iconic family brand that once in a generation it's great to look at."
He added: "Dr Who is a really important show for us and a really good achievement. When you are reviving an old show like that there are banana skins strewn all down the runway. But the reward when it came was great.
"The future of BBC1 rests in being bold - playing safe isn't an option."
The new version of Robin Hood, whose merry men of Sherwood Forest were a thorn in the side of the Sheriff of Nottingham, has yet to be cast.
The favourite for the lead role is Shameless star James McAvoy.
It will be written by Dominic Minghella, the man behind Martin Clunes's ITV series Doc Martin.
BBC drama boss Jane Tranter said: "Like Dr Who, we'll reinvent it with a degree of modernity."
The first Robin Hood was a 1938 movie with Errol Flynn in the leading role. Other film versions have included Kevin Costner in Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves (1991) and Gary Elwes in Robin Hood - Men in Tights (1993).
Patrick Bergen starred in another 1991 version and Disney did a cartoon, with Robin as a fox, in 1973.
In another TV comeback, Russ Abbott will appear in a new series of Miss Marple on ITV.
Best known for his madcap series The Russ Abbott Show, which ran from 1980 until 1994, he will play policeman Inspector Primer alongside Geraldine McEwan as Miss Marple.
Also in the cast are Dawn French, Martin Kemp and Una Stubbs.
Взгляни и зарыдай, шервудец, разлива 80-х!
James McAvoy
еще один лик. может, это будет комедия? Все равно остается вопрос - зачем?
Гарри Поттера смотрели? "Очень полную даму" помните? Так вот - это она!
Robin Hood is set to return to television screens and be given the high budget gloss of the recent Dr Who series.
BBC One's new controller Peter Fincham says he plans to commission a new series of the Nottinghamshire legend, describing the series as 'an iconic family brand'.
The BBC controller added that he hoped to bring the same high production values and quality of writing seen on Doctor Who to the new version of Robin Hood.
'Why shouldn't these values and these writers be brought to family drama, not just 9pm drama?' he said.
Robin Hood hasn't had a mainstream, homegrown series since the days of Michael Praed and Jason Connery in Robin of Sherwood back in the 80's. (We can't really count kiddies series Maid Marian and her Merry Men, good as it was).
The burning question now is who should play Robin?
A recent poll on BBC Radio Nottingham ended with Lord of the Rings star Sean Bean coming out on top. Good choice but he's from Yorkshire and it would open up all those arguments as to where Robin really came from.
We're giving you the chance to vote for the man you want to wear green. We've tried to keep it realistic and left out Hollywood A listers like Jude Law and Brad Pitt (come on, think of your licence fee money). Mind you, Orlando Bloom's managed to squeeze in there!
If you disagree with the list opposite tell us who you'd like to see by using the comment form below. And while you're at it why not tell us who should be the Sheriff, Little John, Friar Tuck etc etc.
Darren Hawkins
As much as Sean would suit the role, far better than the rest of the list, you cant really have a Yorkist playing Robin, Whats wrong with getting back the only true Robin , Michael Praed.
Evi
Who else but Sean Bean? It'll bring him back on the telly, back home to his kids, and he certainly is awesome with arrows ... think Boromir Wink And then the fear that Robbie Williams is getting the part - who according to German tabloids is the favorite for it - would fade away!
Janet reedman
If they were to hire a man of in his early (ala Sean Bean) they may as well rehire MICHAEL PRAED and continue the popular HTV series! I am shocked at some of the choices on the list--thuggish looking skinhead baldies like Statham or Kemp. Maybe the new Robin should have multiple piercings, tattoos, and wear a hoodie too--making him Robin the Hoodie Man??
Tim Gallagher, notts
Paddy Considine has a great mix of fire and humour in his eyes, proved himself in last years awesome 'Dead Man's Shoes' movie, and is from nearby Derby so his accent will fit. He just needs the green hat!
Amanda Oldham
I would love to see either Sean Bean or Orlando Bloom get the role of the New Robin Hood. I originally come from Nottingham but now live in Canada but Sean Bloom probably should get the role as he does have the accent
yvonne wrigley
just to say that Sean Bean definatly gets my vote
andy turner
sean bean most definitely.robin has to be a bit older and battle worn, not some spotty teenager.robin was an outlaw a bit of a hardman.it has to be sean, but if he want do it give me a ring.
Mori Adams
I think James McAvoy (who is apparently being suggested by the BBC) is much too young-looking, and doesn't come across as being able to convincingly play a strong character. Sean Bean would be great but I think he's too much of a film star to go back to TV. Which is a shame as many Hollywood actors appear in US TV dramas. Still, I doubt the BBC could afford him! My suggestion would be Nigel Harman (who plays Dennis Rickman in EastEnders). He'd be perfect.
Tracy McGregor
Sean Bean for the job definitely - Robin was from Loxley which is near Sheffield, and Sean's a Sheffield man - who better to play the part?
Richard Montogomery
Writing from the USA. Would love to see a new Robin Hood series. Stateside we usually only get to see them on Public Television, however. And that is usually years later. Totally enjoyed the Micheal Praed series when they played it here in the early 90's. Good luck with your efforts. As far as a vote, Sean Bean and Orlando Bloom are the only actors I recognize in the list above and I like both of them.
Jo Baird
I think Sean Bean should be the new Robin Hood.
Justin
Maid Marian and her Merry Men was NOT just for the kiddies, there is a lot of subtle humour in the series which only the adults would pickup on. But as it's not available to buy most people won't unfortunately find that out! It's not a good series but a brilliant series!
Pam
If Robin is going to wear tights and flash his chest the only actor who could play him is Hugh Jackman. If I played everybody else I could just look at him, talk to him, listen to him, fight him AND PLAY HIS LOVE INTEREST!!!!! (AND I'LL PAY THE BBC!!!!)
Don Perrin
Sean Bean would be fantastic!
Ewan Mcgregor
Ewan would make a great Robin Hood, but the only problem would be the accesent. As that would be the only thing letting him down. As his attempt in Star Wars as Obi-own was terrrible.
Andrew Bowles
Robert Carlyle is a great actor. He portrayed Adolf Hitler very realistically. However, I can't see him being a convincing Robin Hood. Perhaps he has played too many villians.
Sheilagh Stones
Out of the list offered I can only bring to mind three of the faces - could we have some pictures, please.
Ashley Bordoy
Sean Bean all the way. Great actor, very good in the Sharpe series and Lord of The Rings.
Jo Marriott
Bring back Jason Connery
Jenny Mason
I was a teenager when the Michael Praed/Jason Connery Series was first on our screens and still love it today. I hope that the BBC will see sense and ask an excellent writer like Richard Carpenter to write the new series for the them. I have heard that Richard has a script for a film version of ROS, maybe the BBC could ask him to revamp this to work it into a series. As to who could play him, depends on the age of actor they are looking for, although my favourite will always be Michael, a wonderful truly English actor! BBC, please don't make a farse out of things like the Kevin Cosner film!
Rebekah Fearn
I think Johnny Depp should play robin hood hes played a pirate and willy wonka why not Robin Hood?

Virtual Robin Hood cast - the results
While we await the BBC's glossy reinterpretation of our hero, here's the cast you want to see in the show.
The BBC's planning an updated Robin Hood series. It's early stages at the moment although the Shameless actor James McAvoy has been mooted as playing our hero.
We asked you who you wanted to see in the pivotal roles and these are the names suggested.
Robin Hood
He might be a Yorkshireman but you want Sean Bean to wear Lincoln Green.
Maid Marian
Robin's true love will be Hollywood star Kate Beckinsale (mind you she only just pipped Helena Bonham-Carter!)
Little John
The new Robin Hood >
Who should play Marian? >
Step forward Ray Winstone, who'd be making his second appearance in a Robin Hood series having portrayed Will Scarlet in Robin of Sherwood during the 1980's.
Will Scarlet
Who should play Will? >
Who should play L. John? >
Speaking of which, in the noughties you'd like to see Rhys Ifans wearing a dodgy maroon tunic.
Friar Tuck
Who should play Mr Tuck? >
Who should play Sheriff? >
Who better to distill words of spiritual wisdom (and spirits of the alcoholic variety) than Little Britain's Matt Lucas.
Sheriff of Nottingham
Sean Bean (without a bow)
And Robin's greatest adversary? Well, you'd like to see a reprise by Alan Rickman who has already tried to capture the Hooded Man in the Hollywood blockbuster Robin, Prince of Thieves.
The dream team?
Think the voting is pants? Got any tips for lesser character (like Prince John)? Use the form below to tell us.
Леди Марион - Kate Beckinsale

Robbie for Robin
Rock DJ Robbie Williams could soon become the man in Lincoln Green.
You might have wanted Sean Bean to play the new Robin Hood (see our Virtual Robin Hood cast feature) but it seems BBC telly bods are looking to a pop star to sell the outlaw / legend.
Robbie Williams, he of Angels fame, is apparently the name in the frame for the BBC's glossy new TV series based around Robin and his Merry Men, earmarked for Saturday evenings in late 2006.
It'll probably cost a king's ransom to secure for former Take That man's services and then he'd have to work around his busy recording and live schedule.
But the BBC's Jane Tranter is quoted as saying "Robbie Williams would be great - we have asked him for a few projects before and he has the kind of swagger we're looking for."
It's known that 31-year-old Robbie has aspirations of joining the acting profession and a hit Saturday night TV series would be just the boost needed to kick start a career in Hollywood.
But is Robbie's cheeky-chappie persona really Robin Hood? Is he man enough? Wouldn't he be better suited playing a lute in the role of Alan a Dale?
